WHY DO THIS?

Get to the bottom of why you want to do something in order to make sure you’re pursuing big goals that align with who you are and what your family needs.

RELEVANCE TO THE WHOLE FAMILY APPROACH?

Long-term changes are more likely to stick if they align with our purpose and if we clearly articulate them.

Instructions

  1. Write down a big goal you’re working toward (or would like to work toward) on a sheet of paper.
  2. Ask yourself: “Why are you working toward this goal? Write down your answer and ask yourself “why?” and answer four more times in order to understand your motivation.

For example, if your big goal is to take classes at a community college, your first why answer might be “to get a certification.”  Ask again: “Why do you want a certification?” Your next answer might be “to make more money.” Ask again: “why do you want to make more money?” Keep asking until you have asked “why?” five times.
  3. Now, reflect:

How did this activity make you feel?

Does what you’re working toward for feel right for you? For your family?

Is it best choice for current circumstances?

Does your big goal still feel like the right thing to work toward? Is there something that feels more right?
